American Country Hand Made Windsor Chairs

We think of “Windsor chairs” as a particular design, however the name also implies the type of construction. The basic form is a solid saddle seat with the legs wedged in place, giving a degree of flexibility. Compression provided by the leg stretchers gives great strength and integrity yet the overall look imparts a distinctive delicate appearance. As far back as the 18th century these chairs were being hand made in America and Europe in many styles.

Check the antique market in your area and you will see that many examples from the Windsor chairmaker's craft from the 18th and 19th century still survive today!

Windsor chairs are made with a variety of woods to facilitate the part being made ie: turning, bending, or sculpting. With age the finish will wear, revealing layers of color just as antiques have.

Robert St. Laurent - Windsor Chairmaker

Chair maker Robert St. Laurent handcrafts Windsor chairs from original designs of the 1800's.

Lightweight and comfortable, delicate yet strong, with the integrity of a true heirloom, Robert's chairs have a distinctive layered Milk Paint finish or a single color treatment if preferred with protective coats of varnish and wax for generations of use.

From harvesting native New Hampshire wood, to splitting the log, steaming, bending and sculpting the body of various hardwoods, conforming the seat to applying the finish, each piece is meticulously hand made by this talented artisan. Signed and dated, these chairs will be enjoyed for generations to come.
